New Spotify UI Frustration

New iPad version with sidebar nav

Spotify appears to have rolled out a radically new version of their UI for ipad this week. Gone is the familiar bottom navigation and player in favor of the side menu with a sort of two-tier nested doll type navigation.

Mac OS desktop version

Interestingly, the Mac desktop version chooses to use the words “Your library” while the iOS versions go with “My library”.

I can’t say that I’m a big fan of these changes. I don’t like how the player controls are relegated to the smaller space on the side bar. I also dislike how the subcategories under My Library now require a few clicks to get to.

To add to the confusion. Sometimes the navigation controls are on the bottom left in the sidebar, sometimes they’re on the top left in the main container.

Lyrics view feature in player mode
Lyrics view — I love this feature

It’s not all bad changes however. Recently Spotify added a lyrics view feature which allows me to have solo karaoke sessions in my room.

Perhaps I sound like an old man complaining about how the cable company changed the channels on the remote just as I got used to them. Perhaps I’m just a victim of some experimental A/B testing. However I think the best explanation would be: perhaps it was always like this and I just never noticed until now.
